    The second floating wind power plant in Europe

    The first of three turbines for a built-in floating wind power plant, using WindFloat technology, arrived in Portugal. By the end of the year, the remaining two turbines should also be launched, which will increase the plant's output to a total of 25 MW.

    The project is led by the international consortium Windplus, which consists of the Portuguese EDP Renewables (54.4%), the French ENGIE (25%), the Spanish company Repsol (19.4%) and the American Principle Power Inc. (1.2%). The Portuguese Government, the European Commission and the European Investment Bank contributed financially.

    Floating wind turbines have great potential

    According to Metel, the Windplus project is the first of its kind to be implemented as a commercial project. Offshore wind farms are expected to play a major role in achieving the EU's climate and energy goals.

    According to some wind industry leaders, floating wind power plants will lead to a true globalization of offshore wind energy. The advantage is that these platforms can be installed far off the open sea, in places that were previously inaccessible. Conventional offshore wind power is usually installed to a maximum depth of 50-55 meters. Floating wind turbines do not have these limitations.

    It is expected that costs will decrease as the technology evolves. Today, the cost of floating power plants is around € 180-200 per MWh of electricity generated. However, if there is extensive commercialization, according to Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, the costs could fall to 40-60 euro / MWh.
